Embossed Compact Case | Premium Texture Expression for a Cosmetics Brand

Brand commitment that comes through the moment you hold it.

Project Overview

We received a consultation from an Australian cosmetics brand for a premium-textured compact case to hold a set of perfume samples. Despite fitting in the palm of a hand, the packaging needed to convey a sense of specialness the moment it was opened.

Packtoss adopted an embossing process that raises the brand logo in relief on a matte, white-based exterior. Inside, we designed a dedicated tray that beautifully holds each of the six perfume samples individually, creating packaging that conveys the brand’s world without relying on color or pattern.

The Customer’s Challenge

  • Wanted to convey premium quality simply, avoiding excessive decoration
  • Wanted a design that put the brand logo front and center
  • Wanted to be particular about the texture felt when held
  • Wanted to hold six perfume samples beautifully without damage
  • Wanted to achieve an original package while keeping mold investment down

Packtoss’s Proposal

We designed a configuration that expresses the brand using only the material’s own texture and embossing, without relying on color or pattern. By making the most of the shadow created as the logo catches the light, we pursued a finish where premium quality can be felt through touch as well as sight.

This package is characterized by a construction in which all three parts — lid, body, and tray — are molded from pulp. This is the same molding method used in headphone packaging for brands such as Sony and Beats, and is notable for achieving a premium feel while using an environmentally friendly material.

Furthermore, Packtoss produced the case body (lid and base) using a shared mold, while designing and producing only the perfume sample tray inside as a custom piece matching the customer’s product shape. As a result, the customer’s mold investment is limited to the tray portion, making it possible to achieve an original package with a standout brand logo while keeping costs down.

This design led to the following results.

  • Minimal brand expression that does not rely on color or pattern
  • A premium unboxing experience, including the sense of touch
  • Reduced mold costs through the use of a shared mold
  • A dedicated tray design that beautifully showcases six perfume samples

Key Points of This Case

Logo Expression Through Embossing

Expressing the logo through embossing rather than printing keeps the premium impression intact for longer, as it is resistant to wear over time.

Minimal Design

The simple exterior, with decoration kept to a minimum, has a versatility that suits a wide range of brand images.

Applicable to Compact Products in General

This can be applied to a wide range of cosmetic products requiring portability, such as compact foundations and eyeshadows.

The Feature of a 3-Piece Pulp Mold Construction

A 3-piece construction in which the lid, body, and tray are all molded from pulp is a method also used in headphone packaging for brands such as Sony and Beats. It is characterized by achieving both a premium feel and protective performance without using plastic.

Cost-Reduced Design Through a Shared Mold and Custom Tray

By using a shared mold for the case body and a custom design only for the inner tray, mold investment can be concentrated on the tray portion, achieving an original package that expresses each brand’s world. This design is also suitable for new orders starting from small lots.
